The Abilene community attended the burial of a veteran who didn’t have family present.
The community made clear: no veteran will be left behind.
Robert Doss died on July 15th, and no family or friends could be found to attend his burial service.
Over a hundred people gathered for the ceremony.
The Texas State Veterans Cemetery Representative said a new family was formed.
“He truly does have a family, it’s a ‘brothership’ and a kindship,” Jimmy Defoor said.
Defoor was shocked to see so many people pour into the cemetery.
“The pride just swelled up inside of me,” Defoor said.
He added, “Felt so good to see so many come out and honor a veteran that they didn’t even know.”
Doss had a full military burial along with the United States Air Force.
“We leave no one behind. No veteran will ever be left behind,” Defoor said.
If no family member claims his flag after 90 days, it will be flown at the cemetery during special services.
