For some, their biggest worry is who has the biggest house and nicest car. But for others right here in Abilene, they are worried where they will sleep at night and when their next meal will be.
Hope Haven is doing what they can to combat this epidemic. The organization even has apartments inside their building for their “neighbors.”
Katherine and Taylor with Hope Haven said Abilene is a great town with lots of people who want to help, but they don’t know how.
They said if you see someone walking by or standing on a corner or under a bridge, stop and talk with them. Listen to their story and see why their situation is the way it is.
The two said a lot of these people didn’t choose to live their life this way, the just had some bad luck and couldn’t get back on their feet.
Katherine said the negative stigma associated with people struggling with homelessness is one of the main reasons the problem is so bad.
She said people just assume they are choosing not to work, but that is usually not the case.
"People say just go get a job, well how do you get a job if you don’t have an address to put on an application, how do you get a job if you don’t have nice clothes to go to a job interview or to take a shower," Katherine said.
Katherine said although these people are having a harder go at life, they are still just like you and I.
"Even though they’re homeless they still have dreams, they still have goals," Katherine said.
Hope Haven wants and needs the community’s help, but Katherine and Taylor say the first step to change is to listen to the stories, not pass judgment.
