Running on six hours of sleep for most of the weekend, Anthony Williams and his campaign crew were able to rest on Father’s Day with a smile, knowing they’d just won the mayoral runoff election.
Williams defeated his opponent, Robert Briley and returned to city council – this time sitting in the middle chair.
He eared 57 percent of the votes, equating to 7,015 votes. Briley got just over 5,200 votes.
Norm Archibald has held the office for 13 years.
Over 40 volunteers came together with the new mayor to knock on the doors of some 3,500 homes in a 48-hour span this weekend. We spoke with Williams at his watch party about some of the top items on his early agenda.
Williams says he will work for unification.
He is the city’s first African-American mayor.
