Abilene police have nearly half a dozen investigations going and they all came up overnight or early Tuesday morning.
It started with a shooting before 10 o'clock on Monday night. Police say an 18-year-old woman was in her car at the intersection of E Highway 80 and Judge Ely. That's when several people in another car pulled up next to her and shot multiple rounds into her car. APD says she was shot at least 3 times and this was likely a targeted attack.
About 45 minutes later, APD got a call about an injured subject at the Royal Inn.
"They found a 47-year-old victim who was actually in the lobby area, bleeding profusely. He had been struck in the head multiple times with an ax,” APD Police Chief Stan Standridge said.
The victim was able to tell police that his roommate at the Royal Inn attacked him. Police found the alleged attacker, 56-year-old TJ Williams, at the inn. He was arrested for aggravated assault and family violence.
Just after 1:00 a.m., police were called by a train conductor who said a pedestrian was hit by the train. At first police couldn't find the pedestrian so they walked around the area until eventually, they found a young man in his mid-20s under a tree. They believe his injuries are non-life threatening.
"It's important to note that Union Pacific will actually pick up with this investigation and take it from this point on,” Chief Standridge said.
Then Tuesday morning around 8 o'clock, Abilene S.W.A.T and the Criminal Investigations Division served a search warrant on a home on Jolly Rogers Road and arrested 70-year-old Howard Collier.
"Early information suggests that he allegedly paid juveniles for yard work. We have since learned he was paying them to perform sex acts with each other and on him,” Chief Standridge said.
A sibling of one of the victims reported it to police. Chief Stan Standridge believes there are more victims and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Collier is charged with continuous trafficking of persons which is a first-degree felony.
Chief Standridge says, While APD has 197 officers in the department, they are still very short staffed.
