A former Merkel City secretary was indicted on Sept. 28, 2017 by the Taylor County grand jury. Gwendolyn Wetsel, 55, was accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the City of Merkel.
According to court documents, for over a year, Wetsel was issuing checks to herself and deleted any record of them. Wetsel is also accused of using a City credit card to pay for personal online transactions and gambling. She allegedly also made cash advances to herself from $200 to $800 a month using the credit card.
Wetsel was arrested in April 2017 and was released on a $5,000 bond.
