No Doubt members Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young have teamed up with AFI frontman Davey Havok to form the new supergroup Dreamcar.
“We didn’t want to tell anyone because we didn’t know what was going to happen. It was only when we got to a certain point, we were like, ‘Aw, this could be something really awesome’ that we started sharing with people,” Kanal said.
Even though both bands have been around for more than two decades, Havok says the new project is a fresh start.
“With No Doubt’s history, with AFI’s history, there is a precedence and expectation and past that really forms who that band is and what people perceive it to be, what is expected from it. But when you have something fresh and new, there are no expectations aside from those that people impart on us as individuals, but not as Dreamcar,” Havok said.
Dreamcar showcased songs from their upcoming self-titled album during several sold-out club shows and will play to a much bigger audience at Coachella.
“We’re super excited. I mean, we’ve been writing songs on and off for a couple of years. We made the album and all of a sudden, it’s coming out May 12th,” Dumont said. “This is the funnest part. I guess writing is fun, the record is fun, but this is extra fun.”
