ABILENE, TX - The Abilene Zoo is gearing up for a busy Saturday.
“We’ve extended the invitation, just regionally, for any military, retired military, veterans,” zoo spokesperson Kelly Thompson said.
The “Zoolute to Dyess” has been a part of the Big Country for 35 years – and now other major military events are joining forces, all for a good cause.
“It’s the fastest way to reach the majority of our veterans and active-duty members in one setting,” veteran Geri Massey said.
Armed Forces Day and the Veterans Benefits Fair are other major events happening on Saturday. Twenty-one agencies will be participating.
“They want to connect with veterans and outreach them and let them know, ‘Hey, anything that you need information about or assistance with, we are here to help you.’ And this is your way to meet them face-to-face,” veteran Sheri Byard said.
And the Big Country can expect a new tradition to be made.
“Maybe this will be something we continue to do in the future.”
“Yeah, I can see this being a long-term partnership.”
Even if you’re not in the military, it’s a good day to come out and thank people for their service.
The events start at 7 a.m. There will be prizes and performances throughout the day.
