ABILENE, TX - Something astronomical happened in our neck of the woods: An asteroid has been renamed after a former Hardin-Simmons dean!
It’s now called “Dr. Julius Olsen.”
The asteroid was discovered by Hardin-Simmons 10 years ago, and naming it was a process that takes 10 years as well.
Doctor Patrick Miller and Dr. Olsen’s grandson both made the name suggestion.
Dr. Olsen played a big role in bringing science education to West Texas during the twentieth century.
"It was -- probably never occurred to him that he would ever be considered to be named or have an asteroid named in his honor. So, hopefully, he's quite happy about it," Dr. Miller said.
Dr. Miller is hoping that more family members of Dr. Olsen reach out to him about this honor.
