ABILENE, TX - A proposed charge ruffled some feathers in the Abilene community.
It’s a street maintenance fee.
Some are for the fee, but others aren’t onboard.
Abilene city staff said the fee is a vehicle needed to repair deteriorating roads.
This goal is to raise $10.3 million annually.
That’s something Mayor Anthony Williams wants to change.
"I feel uncomfortable with 10.3 and would like us to have an opportunity to make a reduction in that regards,” said Williams.
To reach this, a charge would be added to the water bill of residents, schools, churches and businesses.
City Council could call a special election to ask voters if they want to dedicate a portion of sales tax to raise money for road repairs.
Two councilmen were for this.
After the discussion, a motion for a November election for the fee failed.
