The number of unauthorized accounts at Wells Fargo may be far more than originally thought.
The bank may have opened as many as 3.5 million unauthorized customer accounts. That would be 1.4 million accounts more than previously reported by federal regulators.
The new estimate appeared in a filing in federal court in San Francisco by lawyers seeking approval of a $142 million settlement over the accounts.
Wells Fargo says the new estimate is “based on a hypothetical scenario.”
Wells Fargo shares are down almost four percent so far this year.
