ABILENE, TX - The Abilene Salvation Army broke their record on the amount of Christmas meals they served this year.
Shelley Futrelle, with Salvation Army, says in 2016 they served nearly 400 meals. This Christmas they served 827 meals.
They broke a record by delivering meals to places other than the police station.
"But this year we added our homeless area. We added convenience stores."
Shelley says 85 percent of their success is the thanks to the helping hands of the community.
"The community coming out, bringing the food, coming out and doing the serving...actually the hands and feet Jesus of doing what they're supposed to be doing. That's amazing,” said Futrelle.
The Salvation Army has a street outreach team continuing the work year-round by serving food and handing out resources.
"But mostly what we do is go and listen because we want to know what gap we are not covering,” said Futrelle. “we go to see what that need is and how we can help."
