Abilene Zoo announces new baby giraffe

ABILENE ZOO ANNOUNCES NEW BABY GIRAFFE - The Abilene Zoo announced a brand-new addition to the Giraffe Safari on Oct. 13. The 22-year-old mother gave birth to the calf just Wednesday night.

Bill Gersonde, executive director of Abilene Zoo said, “We couldn’t be happier to welcome this calf to our current giraffe herd.”

The calf measured 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 159 pounds. Although the labor and delivery had no complications, the calf will likely need corrective surgery due to an umbilical hernia.

The zoo’s veterinarian, Dr. Stephanie Carle said, “The calf does have an umbilical hernia and although anesthesia is risky in giraffes, the calf will likely need corrective surgery in the coming weeks.”

According to a press release, since this is an uncommon condition for giraffes, the zoo’s staff is consulting with other experts throughout the country.

At this time, it is unknown when the giraffe and his mother will make their debut.
