Day 2: capital murder trial

A jury heard more details in the trial of a woman accused of killing her baby.

ABILENE, TX - Oct. 3, 2017 marks day two of the Amber Craker trial. The jury continued to hear the recording of Amber Craker with police. 

In that taped interview, Craker admitted giving birth to her baby and passed out afterwards. According to the tape, Craker's parents were at the house, but she said they were not involved. 

Craker said she flushed her newborn down the toilet and wanted a "proper burial."

Craker said her boyfriend, Damian Cate, may have been holding the baby.

Detectives asked Craker if her parents heard her give birth, where the baby was after the birth and where was Cate?

A taped interview was played for the jury with more conversations Craker had with police. 

According to the tape, detectives said the infant was found in the trash. Craker said, "I promise I didn't mean to hurt my child." Craker said she named the baby Ashley.

Craker said she accidently cut the baby when trying to cut the umbilical cord. 

Craker said her dad cleaned the bathroom. 

Craker said she didn't want to live after what she did. The detective asked her if she planned to slice the baby's throat and throw away the baby, upon finding out she was pregnant. Craker answered, "yes."

According to the tape, the detective asked Cracker if this was murder; Craker answered, "yes sir."

The detective asked if this was her plan, Craker answered, "I was going to give it away."

After the detective asked Craker if she thought her baby was alive, she said she didn't think so.  

The detective asked her why she sliced the baby's throat if it was already dead. Craker's response was "I don't care if you put me in prison or not, I deserve it."

Craker said she placed the baby underneath trash without wrapping it, but detective said the baby was found wrapped.

Craker said Cate had nothing to do with it; but the detective said Cate told him he held the baby and knew it was a girl.

Members of the jury were presented with photos from the baby's autopsy from the Tarrant County medical examiner's office. The examiner gave testimony describing the baby's injuries that are believed to be deliberate. 

According to the examiner, the baby was full-term and suffered stab wounds likely from a knife. The injury was described to be complex, with a minimum of three stab wounds. 

The examiner said a blunt force injury was sustained on the ear with separate injures on the neck, shoulder and wounds under the chin. 

The examiner also said that the baby's airway was cut in two. A blade that is described to be from a knife went through the baby's chest puncturing the back, cutting several ribs, an artery and jugular.
