ABILENE, TX - Uber regulations are now out of the City of Abilene’s hands.
Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft will now be regulated at the state level. The change will go into effect on September 1 – and it overrules the city’s ordinance.
City staff say they aren’t worried about safety issues because the guidelines are similar to the ones Abilene had in place.
We are told the change was needed.
“Initially, the city would have preferred for the state to have acted. The cities across the state would have preferred the state to have acted on this,” Don Green, director of transportation services, said.
This does mean drivers don’t have to be fingerprinted – a requirement the City of Austin had to kill.
