Police Warn Parents to Monitor Children's Social Media

APD warns parents of social media dangers after an Abilene girl is targeted.

ABILENE, TX - Police are warning parents to monitor their children's social media accounts.

Recently a 14 year old girl from Abilene was targeted on Facebook by an unknown man propositioning her for inappropriate acts. That man was not found but the girl and her mother filed a report with APD.

The Abilene Police are now urging parents more than ever to monitor their child's social media accounts and phone behavior.

Rick Tomlin, with APD says it starts with deciding whether your child is an appropriate age for a phone and then deciding whether social media is an option. Tomlin says if it is allowed it should be closely monitored.

"Predators are in Abilene, Texas and all over the country and world so parents have to be the first line of defense to keep their children safe," said Tomlin.

He said it helps to set boundaries and always be aware of what your child is doing and who they are talking to.
