The Book of Henry stars Naomi Watts as a single mother whose gifted son discovers frightening abuse going on at their neighbors – leading them to devise a plan to help the young girl living next door.
The film is a combination of family drama and suspense thriller. Watts said it was a page-turner she had to be a part of.
“You feel like this many years in, you understand the formula that people take. And in this case, there are just many surprises, many twists and turns and, yeah, a lot of heart and thrills and light moments as well. Then some kind of action and suspense towards the end and taking care of business,” Watts said.
Co-star Maddie Ziegler said it’s a film that’s difficult to categorize.
“There are so many different aspects of this movie. It’s fun-loving and family-related, but there’s also a lot of elements of sadness and suspense and happiness,” Ziegler said.
When it comes to the message at the heart of the film, the cast said it’s about doing the right thing.
“They stick together, and they do what they feel is right despite the fact that it means doing things in a sort-of challenging and dangerous way. But it gives you the sense that we did the right thing,” Watts said.
“I think the biggest message of this film, the biggest theme is you shouldn’t stand by and watch bad things happen. You should stand up and take action and protect those who can’t protect themselves,” Jaeden Lieberher said.
“If you see something bad, you should help instead of just letting it grow because you never know how much the person that needs help is hurting,” Jacob Tremblay said.
