13 homeless veterans found a home thanks to the Mayor's Challenge

One local veteran who was homeless and now has a roof over his head thanks to the Mayor's Challenge.

The Mayor’s Challenge is a movement to put an end to veteran homelessness in west Texas.

This challenge initiated at the end of October and is at it’s halfway point.

It is a partnership between Abilene Mayor Anthony Williams, the West Texas Homeless Network and Home Again West Texas.

Airforce veteran Michael Shifflett, is one of the 13 veterans that have been housed since the movement initiated.

Shifflett and his family went homeless just before Thanksgiving.

"I tried to get ahead of it, before it got too bad,” says Shifflett.

It wasn’t long before the Shifflett family found a home thanks to the Mayor’s Challenge.

"Right now, we're trying to get furniture to make life a bit easier...just trying to rebuild,” says Shifflett.

The challenge is set to continue its mission until January 31st.
