At least 80 dogs rescued from home in Callahan County

CALLAHAN COUNTY — Eighty to 100 dogs have been rescued from a home in Callahan County after officials served a search warrant to the property owner.

The property, located approximately two miles from Eula on FM 603, was searched after officials received a call from a passer-by and nearby residents who could smell ammonia coming from the residence.

Rick Jowers, chief deputy with the Callahan County Sheriff's Office, said most of the rescued animals will need to be seen by a veterinarian. Half of the animals were found in cages in the home and Jowers described the smell in the home as "knocking out."

Jowers said he had seen incidents similar to this in the past at a nearby residence. Officials believe the resident in today's incident was possibly hoarding the animals for breeding, but do not believe the owner was selling the dogs.
