ABILENE — UPDATE: Abilene's annual Trout Derby has been canceled because of weather conditions. The City of Abilene said in a social media post that the event will be rescheduled for 2019.

ORIGINAL STORY: Abilene’s annual Trout Derby is slated for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Cal Young Park, 950 T and P Lane. The event is open to anglers of all ages.

The derby is a free event hosted by the City of Abilene Parks and Recreation Department and Texas Parks and Wildlife and is designed to encourage fishing across the state. Activities at the derby include sessions on fish identification, casting, knot tying and more. Food and beverages will be served to participants.

A limited supply of loaner tackle will be available for youth anglers. Organizers ask participants to bring their own fishing equipment, if possible. All participants 17 years or older are required to have a valid Texas fishing license to participate as all statewide regulations will be enforced at this event.
