Open meeting provides input from surrounding communities and Dyess AFB

An open house meeting will be hosted for anyone wanting to provide input on how surrounding communities and Dyess Air Force Base can reduce current and potential conflicts.

The City of Abilene, in cooperation with the City of Tye, Taylor County, Dyess Air Force Base, local property owners, residents along with other agencies and organizations in the region, has prepared a Public Draft Joint Land Use Study (JLUS).

The primary objectives of this meeting is to identify and reduce current and potential conflicts between Dyess AFB and surrounding communities.

The goal is "...sustaining economic vitality of the region, accommodating new growth and economic development, respecting private property rights, protecting public health and safety and sustaining the operational missions of Dyess AFB," according to a press release from the City of Abilene.

Attendees will be provided with an overview of key compatibility issues, findings and recommendations brought up in the Public Draft JLUS Report.

Public comments will be accepted at the meeting. Written comments after the meeting will be accepted until Nov. 13, 2017. Written comments can be provided through the project website or by emailing comments to the City of Abilene's project manager, Don Green, at don.green@abilenetx.com.

The City of Abilene said community input is "essential" to develop a study and recommendations that are responsive to local needs.

The public is encouraged to join the open house on Oct. 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Abilene Convention Center, upstairs in the meeting room. The convention center is located at 1100 N. 6th St.
