Free tax assistance for west Texas residents

VITA is a free tax assistance program offering its services for free to west Texas citizens.

ABILENE, TX. — As tax season approaches, many probably have questions regarding where to go and file.

The volunteer income tax assistance program, or, VITA, offers tax assistance for free.

"We're here to educate our taxpayers about their rights and responsibilities," says VITA coordinator, Anahi Castillo.

The program runs on volunteers including, retired CPA’s, enrolled agents for the IRS and people that have worked in tax preparation for years.

"It’s very important to weigh your pros and cons about what's going to get you more money...especially now this year, that the child tax credit went from 1,000 to 2,000 dollars,” says Castillo.

VITA also runs mobile sites. For example, region 14 includes Albany, Anson and Breckenridge. Additionally, VITA is working with Resource Care in Shackelford county.

Starting next week, one can start calling to set up an appointment for the following week. The number is (325) 672-3969.
