Possible after school program re-opening in Merkel

An interest by the Merkel community to bring back after school program.

ABILENE, TX. — As the school year approaches, most parents and guardians continue to work, raising concern over the availability of after school programs in their area.

The nonprofit, Alliance for Women and Children currently serves Abilene, Buffalo Gap, Clyde and are considering re-opening their location in Merkel.

"Our big big mission and our big push is that no child goes home alone," says Alliance program director, Zac Vines.

The Alliance Merkel location was open for a while, until it had to close its doors last year due to lack of funding.

"We had a few families asking if we were going to be there," says Zac. The nonprofit sent out surveys to see the amount of interest if any.

20 students are to be enrolled by August 13th to open its doors again in Merkel.

"We do also provide financial assistance and scholarships for families that maybe need that extra help," says Zac.

The online enrollment fee is $25 per child. If there is more than two children, it won't exceed $50.

The Alliance is also looking to hire counselors for the upcoming school year. For more information one can go to, http://allianceforwomenandchildren.org/.
