Kirby Lake expansion

Kirby Lake is one the biggest bodies of water in Abilene. "Abilene has many jewels in her crown and this is one of them," Mike Cornett, a local fisherman said.

ABILENE, TX — Kirby Lake is one the biggest bodies of water in Abilene.

"Abilene has many jewels in her crown and this is one of them,” Mike Cornett, a local fisherman said.

About six months ago the city of Abilene drafted plans to polish up this jewel. Fast-forward to today and it has new attractions.

"Folks it's amazing,” Cornett said. “If you haven't been out to lake Kirby in the last two weeks you need to come out."

The completion of phase one included a new playground, log bridges and a nature boardwalk.

Helping hands of the community played a big role in building this place like the ‘Dyess We Care Team.

"The Dyess people are incredible about helping with the local community,” Cornett said. “We want to thank them."

This is just the beginning of something bigger as the city is looking for grants to help fund other expansions like, a canopy walk, a bird blind and more.

"Come in out and enjoy the park,” Cornett said. “Eventually winter will be here.”
