New traffic pattern for the safety of East Elementary students

East Elementary implements new traffic patterns for safety reasons.

BROWNWOOD, TX. — As the new school year approaches, changes have been made to ensure safety among students.

Brownwood ISD worked closely with the city of Brownwood along with the Brownwood police department to come up with a new traffic plan when parents pick up and drop off their children at East Elementary.

"What we saw in years past is you would have cars stop and a car outside of them in a lane of traffic, and kids running in between bumpers to get to their car and that's just not safe," says Brownwood PD chief, Terry Nichols.

The street in front of East Elementary, Vincent, which was once a two-way street, is now one way. The closest lane to the campus will be the drop-off lane.

"We would have parents leave their cars parked through traffic...and then that holds up traffic. We would walk the kids across traffic to their car and open the car door for them," says East Elementary principal.

Now, parents, teachers, and students won't be allowed to cross the lanes at any time.

There are also several parking spaces in front of the building to allow parking for parents if needed.

In addition to the one-way street, there is a four-way stop on Vincent and Idlewild. As well as a three-way stop at Vincent and Roanoke.

"It's going to take some getting used to, ask everyone's patience, we're going to have a big law enforcement presence the next couple of days just to help guide," says chief Nichols.
